How To Make Sweet Potato Chips in the Air Fryer

This recipe is so quick and easy to make. You only need a small handful of simple all natural ingredients to make these air fried sweet potato chips. This is what you will need:

  • 1 Sweet Potato – The star of the recipe; sweet, nutritious, and naturally delicious.
  • Olive Oil or Vegetable Oil – Adds a touch of moisture and helps achieve that crispy texture.
  • Salt – Enhances the natural sweetness and flavor of the chips.
  • Pepper – Adds a subtle kick and balances the sweetness.

For the exact measurements of the ingredients, see the printable recipe card at the bottom of this article.

Kitchen Tools You Need To Make Air Fryer Sweet Potato Chips

  • Air Fryer – Essential for achieving the perfect crispy texture without deep frying.
  • Cutting Board – Provides a stable surface for slicing the sweet potato.
  • Sharp Knife – Helps to slice the sweet potato thinly and evenly for uniform cooking.
  • Large Mixing Bowl – Makes it easy to toss the sweet potato slices with oil and seasoning.
  • Spatula – Handy for flipping the chips midway through cooking.

Once you have your ingredients, start by washing the sweet potato and cutting the ends off. You can leave the sweet potato unpeeled like I do or peel it if you prefer. And if your sweet potato is large you will need to cut it in half longways. Then use a sharp knife to thinly slice. The thinner you slice the potato the better for crispier chips.

Next, add the sliced sweet potato to a large bowl. Then drizzle with a little olive oil, sprinkle with salt and pepper to season, and toss together to coat the sweet potato with the oil and seasonings. You want to make sure every chip is evenly coated for the best flavor. I kept mine simple using just salt and pepper, but you can use any seasoning you like on the chips.

Now to cook, put the coated sliced sweet potato into the air fryer basket and place in air fryer to cook at 350 degrees fahrenheit for 15 minutes. Then at halfway through cooking remove the air fryer basket and flip the chips over using a spatula. Flipping the chips helps them to evenly cook and come out perfectly crisp and crunchy. Then put the basket back into the air fryer to finish cooking.

After the chips are done cooking, remove them from the air fryer basket and put them on a plate for 5 to 10 minutes to cool and crisp up even more. Cooled chips have a wonderful delicious crunch and are worth the wait.

Once cooled down the sweet potato chips are ready to eat! They are wonderful fresh out the air fryer and even better with a yummy dip like my keto bacon cheddar dip or smoked salmon cream cheese dip.

Air Fryer Sweet Potato Chip Variations

These sweet potato chips cooked in the air fryer are fantastic seasoned with just simple salt and pepper, but you can use any seasoning you like to craft your own flavor combination. For example, using cinnamon with a dash of salt would make a lovely savory sweet chip. A sprinkle of smoked paprika would be amazing too. And if you like spicy foods adding some cayenne pepper or ground chipotle would be perfect. The options are endless!

Tips For Success

  • Slice Thin and Evenly: The thinner and more uniform your slices, the crispier your chips will be. Uneven slices may lead to some chips being overcooked while others remain soft.
  • Don’t Overcrowd the Basket: Arrange the sweet potato slices in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Overlapping slices can result in uneven cooking and soggy chips.
  • Flip Halfway Through: Flipping the chips midway ensures they cook evenly on both sides and achieve that perfect crunch.
  • Cool Before Serving: Allow the chips to cool for a few minutes after cooking. This cooling time enhances their crispiness, making them even more delicious.
  • Experiment with Seasonings: Don’t be afraid to try new flavors! Sprinkle smoked paprika, cinnamon, or even a dash of cayenne for different taste variations.

Storage and Reheating

  • Storage: Store leftover sweet potato chips in an airtight container at room temperature. Make sure they are completely cooled before storing to maintain their crispiness. They’ll stay fresh for up to 3 days.
  • Reheating: To regain their crunch, reheat the chips in the air fryer at 325°F for 2-3 minutes. Avoid microwaving, as this may make them soggy.
  • Tips for Longevity: For longer storage, consider using a vacuum-sealed container to keep out moisture. If the chips start to lose their crispiness, you can pop them back into the air fryer for a quick refresh.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make these chips without oil?

Yes, you can! While the oil helps in achieving a crispy texture, you can skip it for an oil-free version. The chips may be slightly less crispy but will still be delicious and healthy.

Why aren’t my chips crispy?

The key to crispy chips is slicing the sweet potato very thin and ensuring the slices don’t overlap in the air fryer. Also, let the chips cool after cooking to allow them to crisp up even more.

Can I use a mandoline to slice the sweet potato?

Absolutely! A mandoline slicer is perfect for achieving evenly thin slices, which helps with even cooking and better texture.

What other seasonings work well for these chips?

You can experiment with seasonings like garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, or even nutritional yeast for a cheesy flavor. Sweet options like cinnamon and sugar also work beautifully.

How do I prevent the chips from burning?

Monitor the cooking time closely, especially if your slices are thinner. Start checking the chips a few minutes before the recommended time to avoid overcooking.

These were great! I had to add 4min, but maybe my tray was too full. Would sprinkling ranch dressing on work? Or is that something maybe to shake on after?
