Ingredients To Make Air Fried Chicken Fajitas

Are you ready to make this fajita recipe yourself? Let’s go! This is the list of ingredients you need to make it happen:

  • Boneless skinless chicken breasts – Sliced into thin strips for even cooking and juicy bites.
  • Bell peppers – Use any color you like for a vibrant and flavorful mix.
  • Onions – Adds a sweet and savory touch when cooked.
  • Chili powder – Provides the classic fajita seasoning with a touch of heat.
  • Lime juice – Adds a bright and tangy flavor to the marinade.
  • Olive oil – Helps coat the chicken and veggies for even cooking and enhances the flavor.

For the seasoning, all you need is chili powder or if you’d like, you can use taco seasoning instead! I also added some lime juice and olive oil to make a quick marinade for the chicken. It made all the difference!

Cooking Tips:

  • This is an optional step you can do: for a deeper flavor, marinate the raw fajita mixture on the counter for 30 minutes or in a refrigerator overnight before cooking in the air fryer.
  • You can also turn it into a freezer meal by freezing the raw fajita mixture and defrosting it later when you’re ready to cook.
  • For healthy meal prep, divide the cooked chicken fajitas between meal prep containers and refrigerate.

What To Serve With Chicken Fajitas

Anytime I make fajitas, I always like to make some of my famous (at least in our household) homemade Mexican flour tortillas and top it off with some of my easy homemade guacamole and fresh pico de gallo salsa!

Looking for a low carb option? Consider adding the chicken and veggies to make a refreshing and filling fajita taco salad!

Variations and Substitutions

  • Protein Swaps: Substitute chicken with shrimp, beef, or tofu for a different take on fajitas. Shrimp cooks even faster, while beef strips add a rich, savory flavor.
  • Vegetarian Option: Skip the meat and double up on veggies like mushrooms, zucchini, or eggplant. These absorb the fajita seasoning beautifully.
  • Different Seasonings: Use taco seasoning, Cajun spice, or a smoky chipotle blend for unique flavor twists. Adjust the spice level based on your preference.
  • Add More Veggies: Include other colorful options like cherry tomatoes, poblano peppers, or asparagus for extra nutrition and variety.
  • Dairy-Free Alternatives: If serving with toppings like sour cream or cheese, choose dairy-free options like coconut yogurt or plant-based cheeses.
  • Low-Carb Wraps: Serve the fajitas in lettuce wraps or low-carb tortillas for a keto-friendly meal.
  • Citrus Alternatives: Swap lime juice with lemon or orange juice for a different tangy flavor.
  • Oil-Free Option: Skip the olive oil and use a spritz of cooking spray to lightly coat the mixture before air frying.

Storage and Reheating

  • Storage: Place leftover chicken fajitas in an airtight container and store them in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. For longer storage, freeze the cooked fajitas in a freezer-safe container or bag for up to 3 months.
  • Reheating in the Microwave: Transfer the desired portion to a microwave-safe dish and heat for 1-2 minutes, stirring halfway through, until warmed evenly.
  • Reheating in the Air Fryer: Place the fajitas in the air fryer basket and reheat at 350°F for 3-5 minutes, shaking the basket halfway for even heating.
  • Reheating on the Stovetop: Heat a skillet over medium heat, add the fajitas, and stir occasionally until warmed through.
  • Tips for Reheating: Add a splash of water or squeeze of lime juice when reheating to prevent the fajitas from drying out.
