How To Make Mexican Pickled Red Onions

Start out by peeling and slicing the red onions. Chop off the ends, peel off the outer layer, and cut the onion in half. Then chop into thin slices. Add the onions to a medium-sized bowl.

Slice (washed) limes into quarters. Then squeeze each lime wedge over the onion slices. Fresh lime juice is really best in recipes, it has the most potent flavor.

Next add your seasonings: vinegar, salt, and pepper. Use a big spoon to mix all the ingredients and coat onions in seasonings. Place bowl in fridge to marinate for one hour before serving.

Should You Soak Red Onions in Water or Vinegar For a Salad?

Depending on which liquid you use, you will get different results. Choose your method based on whether you want crunchy onions or softer onions. Place sliced onions in a bowl of ice cold water for 30 minutes if you want crunchy onions with a sharp taste. Marinate onions slices in vinegar for slightly softer onions with a sweeter taste.
