Instant Pot Frozen Cooked Shrimp

Even though you can thaw frozen shrimp under running water, it’s nice to be able to do it in the Instant Pot.  Instant Pot will not only thaw your frozen shrimp, it will cook it and your shrimp will be piping hot!  This Instant Pot frozen shrimp recipe works well for both raw and cooked frozen shrimp.

Instant Pot And Bag Of Frozen Shrimp

Since shrimp cooks really quickly, for frozen cooked shrimp I’m utilizing my “zero minutes” technique that I also use for quick-cooking vegetables in the Instant Pot (such as broccoli, cauliflower and asparagus).  Set the cooking time to zero (0) minutes on High pressure, followed by a quick release (QR), and while the Instant Pot comes to pressure the shrimp will be already thawed and heated!  I also use 1/2 cup of hot tap water (instead of cold) so the Instant Pot comes to pressure as quickly as possible!

How to cook frozen cooked and frozen raw shrimp in the Instant Pot

For frozen raw shrimp, I use the cooking time of 1 minute on High pressure followed by the quick release (QR).  One minute is plenty of time to pressure cook raw shrimp to perfection!

Now you’ve got a perfect seafood dinner in minutes, thanks to your Instant Pot!  Serve this shrimp over rice or quinoa, add it to salads, or toss with some butter and minced garlic for a quick shrimp scampi.  You can also serve it with the homemade shrimp cocktail sauce – delicious!

  1. 1) Would you recommend the same 1 minute for a frozen bag of seafood mix/medley?

    2) And I have an 8Qt IP. Do you still recommend only ½cup water for seafood medley?

    3) Usually the 8Qt calls for 2cups liquid. I’m assuming your adding only ½ of 1 cup because the seafood will that and create liquid?

    Thanks! B-)

    1. Since I don’t know what’s in that seafood mix, I’d do 3 minutes just to be on a safe side, as stuff that’s not shrimp might need more time to cook. I’d do 1 cup of water for 8Qt Instant Pot, and yes, more water is released from frozen seafood.

  2. This worked great! Perfectly cooked shrimp and so easy! The only issue I had was some of the liquid spewing out as I released the pressure. Any advice?

  3. If I wanted to make half a pound would the water still be the same amount? I know instant pots get funny if they don’t have enough water. Thanks!

I always pay more for the cooked, cleaned shrimp at our seafood counter since mine turn out dry and chewy. I pulled out a bag of frozen shrimp that I had forever in a diet friendly cooking emergency ? and figured I’d give your advice a shot. Oh my goodness. So much better than the grocery store or even a restaurant! With no oils or butters or added salt, these were the best shrimp I’ve ever made. Thank you for saving my diet…and lots of money on the future

I was a little skeptical about using 1 minute on a pressure cooker for 4lbs of raw frozen jumbo shrimp BUT it worked!! I added Old Bay and a yellow sliced onion and dinner is served. I’m having mine over a salad and the kiddis will have theirs with green beans and potatoes.

Thank you! I made tonight using frozen raw shrimp and I loved not having to dethaw the traditional way. Time saver and tasted delicious!
