Make sure your mushrooms are cleaned first if they are dirty.

One tip to cleaning mushrooms is to use a damp paper towel to gently brush off any visible dirt. Most mushrooms that are grown indoors are already free of pesticides and dirt so they might be clean enough as is.

What to Serve with Instant Pot Sausage and Mushrooms

You can serve this recipe as is since it is already quite filling! However, you might want to add on a side of greens or salad for a more balanced meal. You can keep it keto/low-carb by using one of these recipe suggestions!

Variations And Substitutions

  • Different Types of Sausages: Swap Italian sausages for spicy chorizo, mild bratwurst, or smoked kielbasa. Each variety brings a unique flavor profile to the dish. If you’re looking for a leaner option, turkey or chicken sausages are great substitutes.
  • Mushroom Alternatives: While cremini mushrooms are ideal, you can experiment with portobello caps, shiitake mushrooms, or even a medley of wild mushrooms for added variety. If you’re not a fan of mushrooms, replace them with sliced zucchini or bell peppers.
  • Add Veggies: Boost the nutritional value by adding vegetables like chopped onions, bell peppers, or cherry tomatoes. Toss them in with the mushrooms for a colorful and healthy addition.
  • Flavor Enhancers: For a richer taste, substitute the water with chicken or beef broth. You can also drizzle balsamic vinegar or soy sauce on the mushrooms after cooking for a tangy twist.
  • Herbs and Spices: Experiment with spices like smoked paprika, cumin, or red pepper flakes for extra heat. Fresh herbs like parsley or thyme make excellent garnishes.
  • Low-Carb Sauces: If you’re keto or low-carb, serve the sausages and mushrooms with a dollop of garlic butter or a keto-friendly marinara sauce.
  • Serving Over Starches: Not keto? Serve this dish over mashed potatoes, white rice, or even pasta for a complete and satisfying meal.

Storage And Reheating

  • Storage: Allow the sausages and mushrooms to cool completely before transferring them to an airtight container. Store in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
  • Freezing: For longer storage, place the cooled sausages and mushrooms in a freezer-safe container or resealable bag. Freeze for up to 3 months. To prevent freezer burn, ensure all air is removed from the bag.
  • Reheating in the Microwave: Place the sausages and mushrooms on a microwave-safe plate, cover with a microwave lid or damp paper towel, and heat in 30-second intervals until warm.
  • Reheating on the Stovetop: Add a splash of water or broth to a skillet and reheat the sausages and mushrooms over medium heat, stirring occasionally until heated through.
  • Reheating in the Instant Pot: Use the sauté function with a small amount of water or broth to reheat quickly while keeping everything moist and flavorful.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use frozen sausages for this recipe?

Yes! Frozen sausages work perfectly in this recipe. Simply increase the cooking time in the Instant Pot from 15 minutes to 20 minutes. No need to thaw them beforehand—just place them directly on top of the mushrooms and proceed with the recipe.

What type of mushrooms should I use?

Cremini, baby bella, or white button mushrooms are all excellent choices. You can even mix and match different types of mushrooms for added flavor and texture. Ensure they are clean by gently wiping them with a damp paper towel before cooking.

What should I do if I get a “burn” warning on my Instant Pot?

This typically happens if there isn’t enough liquid in the pot. Make sure you’re using at least 1 cup of water for a 6-quart Instant Pot or slightly more for an 8-quart model. Also, avoid overcrowding the bottom of the pot, as this can prevent even heating.

Can I add other vegetables to this recipe?

Absolutely! Bell peppers, zucchini, cherry tomatoes, or sliced onions can be added alongside the mushrooms. These vegetables cook well under pressure and complement the flavors of the sausage.

How can I enhance the flavor of this dish?

Season the dish after cooking with additional spices like garlic powder, onion powder, or smoked paprika. You can also use chicken or beef broth instead of water for a richer taste, or drizzle balsamic vinegar over the cooked mushrooms for a tangy kick.

Is this recipe keto-friendly?

Yes, this recipe is naturally keto-friendly! It’s low in carbs and high in protein, making it a great option for those following a ketogenic or low-carb diet. Pair it with other keto-friendly sides like roasted cabbage or sautéed spinach for a complete meal.

How do I prevent the sausages from sticking to the bottom of the Instant Pot?

Place the mushrooms on the bottom of the Instant Pot and arrange the sausages on top. The mushrooms and water create a buffer, ensuring the sausages don’t stick.

I literally enjoyed this 15 minutes ago. So good! I used baby bella mushrooms and mild Italian sausage. I was worried about the texture of the mushrooms being steamed. But texture was great. Meaty! Used salt and pepper to season. That’s all they needed for me. My wife liked too. And recipe couldn’t be any easier. This is a keeper! Might try pasta sauce instead of water in the future. Great recipe! Thank You for sharing this one!
