These Instant Pot steamed green beans are so easy to make, healthy and delicious! No need for a steamer rack, and no dealing with a pot of water on the stove!

Instant Pot Green Beans

I love steaming vegetables in my Instant Pot!  It’s so much quicker and easier than doing it on the stove! Not having to deal with a boiling pot of water is priceless :)

Instant Pot Green Beans

My process evolved from initially learning how to steam green beans on the stove, to figuring out how to cook green beans in the microwave and loving this shortcut.  The latest technique I use is cooking the green beans in the Instant Pot pressure cooker!

How To Cook Green Beans In The Instant Pot

The process for Instant Pot steamed green beans is exactly the same as for Instant Pot steamed broccoli.  Put half a cup of water in the Instant Pot along with the green beans, press the “Pressure Cook” or “Manual” button and set the time to ZERO minutes.

The green beans will be perfectly cooked during the time it takes for the Instant Pot to come to pressure! Once it comes to pressure, the timer will beep since it’s set to zero.  Open the lid immediately, drain the green beans and wash them under cold running water to stop the cooking process.

Notice how I don’t use the steaming rack for green beans, I just dump them directly in the Instant Pot along with the water. This is because the steaming rack or basket is optional :)  If you have the Instant Pot steamer basket insert, you can place the green beans in the steamer basket.  The advantage of having that basket is that you can just lift it out of the Instant pot when the green beans are done cooking, and rinse the cooked green beans until cold running water directly in it (no need to drain the green beans and no need for a separate colander).  Without the steamer basket, just use the colander to drain and rinse the green beans the old fashioned way :)

  1. Hi – I’m curious why you rinse the green beans under cold water after cooking them. Are they going to be used for a salad so you’d prefer them colder? Also, IP states to use at least 1.5 cups of water in the IP Duo Evo Plus 6 quart. You haven’t found 1/2 a cup to be too little? Maybe they’re erring on the cautious side because of the wide variety of foods people will be cooking.

    1. I rinse them to stop the cooking process, so the green beans don’t get mushy. This step is optional. My IP Duo Plus does fine with 1/2 cup of water, but you can use more water if you’d like.
