Their rich, earthy aroma and taste add zing to your cooking; and their versatility makes them perfect for this air fryer pizza.  I made button mushrooms in the air fryer before, and this portobello pizza is the next mushroom recipe I wanted to make in the air fryer.

Portobello mushrooms and cheese have formed the perfect alliance in this recipe to create a mouth-watering, cheesy pizza.

Ingredients for the Air Fryer Portobello Pizza

The ingredients for this air fryer portobello pizza was kept light and simple. This makes it easy for you to use the items you have on hand, without sacrificing taste.

Flavor is always important when making pizza, especially since you aren’t using the traditional flour crust, but portobello mushrooms as the base.  A combination of portobellos, tomato sauce and mozarella is mouthwatering!  So healthy and delicious!

How to Make Air Fryer Portobello Pizza

Making air fryer portobello pizza is super easy! Just pre-cook the portobellos in the air fryer, then spread with tomato sauce, sprinkle with shredded cheese and air-fry again until the cheese is melted!

To get the ball rolling, brush olive oil on to the gills of the portobellos.  Place your portobellos into the air fryer’s basket with the bottom facing up and gills down (to prevent the gills from drying out). Cook for 9 minutes on 400F temperature. As mushrooms are about 80-90% water, cooking them before adding the other ingredients will remove a sufficient amount of water. This prevents a soggy and mushy pizza.

Once done, flip the portobellos to ensure the gills are facing upward. Season with salt and pepper.

Follow-up with your tomato sauce, spreading it evenly in the portobellos.

Top it off with your Italian seasoning.

Finally, sprinkle shredded mozzarella cheese on top of portobello pizza.

Close the air fryer basket and cook for another 3 minutes on the same temperature. You’ll have a cheesy air fryer portobello pizza that’s absolutely delicious when done.

  • 2 large portobello mushroom caps
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 tbsp tomato sauce
  • 1/4 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/8 tsp pepper
  • 1/2 tsp Italian herb seasoning

  • Brush the gill side of the portobellos with olive oil.
  • Put the portobellos in the air fryer basket gill side down. Cook in the air fryer at 400F for 9 minutes.
  • Flip the portobello mushrooms so they are gill side up. Sprinkle the mushrooms with salt and pepper.
  • Spread the tomato sauce over the portobellos and sprinkle with Italian seasoning.
  • Sprinkle the shredded cheese over the portobellos.
  • Cook the portobello pizzas in the air fryer at 400F for another 3 minutes, or until the cheese is melted.
