This papaya salsa is like the taste of the tropics in a bowl!  So easy to make and so delicious!

Looking for something unique, delicious and refreshing, yet easy to whip up, for a summer get-together?   (Who wants to work too hard when its 98 degrees in the shade?  Not me!)  This papaya salsa is your answer!   As an added bonus, it’s also healthy – low in calories and high in Vitamin C, but you don’t have to tell anyone enjoying it that – it will be our little secret!

This papaya salsa  always reminds me of a wonderful tropical vacation where we had it with jerk chicken, and later in the week , with some grilled fish.  It made them so special!  I can almost feel the warm sun, the gentle breezes, and feel the soft sand between my toes!  If you’ve been to the Caribbean, or Mexico, or Hawaii, you too may have sampled papaya, and this will bring back memories to you as well, I’m sure.  If you haven’t tried papaya, but like salsa,  this papaya salsa will be a great introduction! And it’s so simple to make!

Easy Papaya Salsa

So, let’s get cooking!  Metaphorically, at least, since you’re not actually cooking this salsa, just doing some slicing and dicing and chopping on  4 ingredients – how’s that for easy?

How To Make Papaya Salsa

First, you need a ripe papaya.  Most every supermarket has them in the produce department.  A ripe papaya has yellow or yellow-red skin, and will be slightly soft when you press on it, like a nicely ripe avocado.  It will smell slightly sweet, too.  If you can only find partly ripe ones (green or partially green), just let it ripen for a few days on your counter.  You’ll soon have luscious papaya salsa to savor!

If this is your first papaya experience, don’t worry – it’s easy to prepare.  Simply cut that ripe papaya in half lengthwise, scoop out the peppery black seeds, and peel with a vegetable peeler or small sharp knife.  I find that I can sometimes simply grab the skin and peel it away from the fruit.  Then just slice and dice and proceed with the recipe!

Try this delicious salsa as a dip for chips (try the “lime” ones with this – great combination!)  or  to fancy up some simple grilled chicken,  pork,  ahi tuna, or swordfish, or  even simple baked fish – so yummy! In the winter, this papaya salsa will bring a little summer to your day, and a smile to your face :) If you don’t like cilantro, no worries – simply sub in fresh parsley with a little fresh mint or basil! Enjoy!

  • 1 papaya finely diced
  • 1 onion finely diced
  • 1 jalapeno minced (seeds removed)
