Grilled Pizza Recipe - How To Grill Pizza The Easy Way!

Is your usual grilling menu getting a little boring? Are the only things you grill amount to burgers, hot dogs and chicken? Don’t get me wrong, I love grilled chicken, burgers and hot dogs too, but sometimes I just feel like grilling something different… something unique. For a new grilling experience, you have got to try grilling pizza! This is so tasty and so fun – and everyone is going to go crazy for your homemade grilled pizza and demand it every time!

If you have any vegetarians invited to your BBQ, pizza is a perfect option for vegetarian grilling! Forget about grilling veggie burgers and eggplant :) Unlike grilled vegetables, pizza is a REAL main dish that will actually fill people up!

Grilled pizza can be customized with the toppings of your choice. The basic toppings are tomato sauce and cheese, and after that anything goes – mushrooms, peppers, onions, sausage, pepperoni, pineapple, olives, you name it! You can even make small individual pizzas when people can choose their preferred toppings! Custom grilled pizzas – hey, I want to be invited to that BBQ ;)

How To Grill Pizza

Grilling pizza might sound intimidating, but it is actually not that hard. Once you try it the first time, you’ll get the hang of it and think it’s easy! The difference between my instructions and other people’s instructions that you’ll find on the Internet is that they recommend adding sauce and toppings while the pizza is still on the grill. I think their way is a recipe for disaster if you are not an experienced grillmaster – you can get burned yourself or burn the pizza, not to mention feeling like you are in the episode of “Hell’s kitchen”! My way of grilling pizza is much more laid back – I grill one side of pizza, take it off the grill, add the toppings and then put it back on the grill – it’s much easier this way and more foolproof!

Step 1: Preheat the grill on High heat

Preheat the grill on the highest temperature that you have.

Step 2: Prepare the pizza dough

Pizza dough can be homemade (see my easy bread machine pizza dough recipe) or store-bought.  Canned pizza dough is sold in well-stocked supermarkets in the refrigerator isle next to other kinds on refrigerator dough.  Roll out the pizza dough to the correct size.

Step 3: Brush pizza dough with oil

Brush the pizza dough with olive oil on both sides. The oil will keep the dough from sticking to the grill.

Step 4: Put dough on a grill

Using 2 spatulas, carefully put the dough on a grill. Do not close the lid. Let it grill for several minutes, checking periodically the underside of the crust with tongs for doneness, until the bottom is golden-brown.

Step 5: Remove pizza crust from grill and flip onto a plate

Remove the dough from grill carefully, carry it to the plate and flip it, so the pizza is on the plate with the cooked side UP.

Step 6: Add toppings to pizza

Add the pizza sauce, cheese and any other toppings to pizza while it’s on a plate. Make sure the toppings to the side of the crust that’s cooked (uncooked side should be down).

Step 7: Put pizza back on the grill and finish cooking

Carefully transfer the pizza back on the grill. Close the lid for 2 minutes. Open the lid, check the bottom of the pizza for doneness with tongs. Continue grilling on the open grill until the bottom of the crust is golden brown and the pizza is ready!
