What to Serve with Air Fried Meatloaf

Who doesn’t love a tender and juicy meatloaf for dinner? This meatloaf is great on its own, but is even better with some fabulous sides. Traditionally meatloaf is paired with mashed potatoes!

Tips For Success

  • Choose the Right Meat: For the best texture, use ground meat with some fat content. If you choose turkey, opt for a mixture that isn’t too lean to avoid dryness.
  • Mix Gently: Overmixing can make the meatloaf tough. Combine the ingredients just until everything is evenly distributed.
  • Size Matters: Shape the loaf to fit your air fryer basket with some space around the edges for even cooking. Avoid making it too thick to ensure it cooks through.
  • Prevention of Sticking: Always spray your air fryer basket with non-stick cooking spray or brush it lightly with oil. This step ensures easy removal and keeps your meatloaf intact.
  • Check for Doneness: Use a meat thermometer to check the internal temperature, which should reach 160°F for beef or pork and 165°F for turkey.
  • Let it Rest: After cooking, allow the meatloaf to rest for a few minutes before slicing. This helps retain its juices and keeps the slices intact.
  • Customize Your Flavor: Experiment with additional seasonings like garlic powder, paprika, or Worcestershire sauce for a unique flavor twist.
  • Make Ahead: Mix and shape the meatloaf ahead of time, then refrigerate until you’re ready to cook. This saves time during busy evenings.
  • Don’t Skip the Glaze: The ketchup layer not only adds flavor but also helps lock in moisture. You can substitute it with barbecue sauce or a honey-mustard mix for a different taste.

Variations And Substitutions

  • Meat Options: Customize the meatloaf to your taste by combining different meats like beef and pork for added flavor or using ground chicken for a leaner version. If you prefer a plant-based option, substitute the meat with a ground meat alternative and adjust seasonings to taste.
  • Seasoning Swaps: Add your favorite spices like smoked paprika, cumin, or garlic powder for a unique flavor twist. If you love heat, a pinch of cayenne or red pepper flakes will do the trick.
  • Breadcrumb Alternatives: For a gluten-free version, use almond flour or gluten-free breadcrumbs. You can also use crushed crackers, oats, or cooked quinoa for a creative binder.
  • Dairy-Free Adaptation: If using a pre-made breadcrumb mix, ensure it’s dairy-free or make your own.
  • Vegetable Add-Ins: Boost nutrition by finely chopping carrots, zucchini, or bell peppers and mixing them into the meatloaf. This is also a great way to sneak in veggies for picky eaters.
  • Sauce Options: While ketchup is classic, you can switch it up with barbecue sauce, teriyaki glaze, or a tangy marinara for the topping.
  • Portion Adjustments: Make mini individual meatloaves instead of one large loaf for quicker cooking and easy serving.
  • Low-Carb/Keto Version: Replace breadcrumbs with crushed pork rinds or Parmesan cheese to make this recipe keto-friendly.
  • Batch Cooking: Double the recipe and freeze one loaf uncooked for a future meal. Simply thaw and cook when needed.
  • Herb Enhancements: Fresh herbs like parsley, thyme, or basil can be added to the mix for a burst of fresh flavor.

Storage and Reheating

  • Storing Leftovers: Allow the meatloaf to cool completely, then transfer it to an airtight container. Store in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • Freezing: Wrap the cooked meatloaf tightly in plastic wrap, then place it in a freezer-safe bag or container. It can be frozen for up to 3 months. To freeze uncooked meatloaf, wrap it in the same way and freeze it before cooking.
  • Thawing: If frozen, thaw the meatloaf in the refrigerator overnight before reheating or cooking.
  • Reheating: For best results, reheat the meatloaf in the air fryer at 350°F for 5-7 minutes to restore its crispy texture. Alternatively, you can use the oven by placing it in a covered dish at 350°F for 10-15 minutes.
  • Microwave Option: If you’re in a hurry, reheat slices in the microwave for 1-2 minutes, though the crust might lose its crispiness.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use frozen meat for this recipe?

Yes, you can use frozen meat, but make sure to thaw it completely before mixing with the other ingredients. This ensures even cooking and proper seasoning distribution.

What if my air fryer is too small for a full meatloaf?

If your air fryer basket is small, consider dividing the mixture into two smaller loaves or shaping it into patties. Adjust the cooking time accordingly, as smaller portions cook faster.

Can I use a different topping instead of ketchup?

Absolutely! Barbecue sauce, honey mustard, or marinara sauce make great alternatives to ketchup. Just ensure you brush it on evenly for a nice glaze.

How do I know when the meatloaf is fully cooked?

Use a meat thermometer to check the internal temperature. For beef or pork, it should reach 160°F, and for turkey or chicken, 165°F. This ensures it’s safe to eat.

Can I add cheese to the meatloaf?

Yes, shredded cheese can be mixed into the meatloaf for added flavor. Alternatively, stuff the center of the loaf with mozzarella or cheddar for a gooey surprise.

What can I do if the meatloaf is too dry?

Adding an extra egg or a splash of milk to the mixture can help retain moisture. Also, avoid overcooking, as this can dry out the meatloaf.

Is this recipe gluten-free?

To make it gluten-free, substitute the breadcrumbs with gluten-free breadcrumbs, crushed rice crackers, or almond flour. Be sure to check the labels of all other ingredients as well.

Can I prep this meatloaf ahead of time?

Yes! You can mix and shape the meatloaf, then refrigerate it for up to 24 hours before cooking. This is a great time-saver for busy schedules.

Can I cook vegetables alongside the meatloaf in the air fryer?

Yes, but ensure the vegetables are cut into smaller pieces and arranged around the meatloaf without overcrowding the basket. Adjust the cooking time for the veggies as needed.

How do I prevent the meatloaf from sticking to the air fryer basket?

Spray the basket generously with non-stick cooking spray or line it with parchment paper designed for air fryers. This prevents sticking and makes cleanup easier.
