Unsweetened coconut flakes is a staple food in my pantry. I love adding them to my low carb yogurt breakfast and smoothie bowls – they add a welcome crunch, texture and flavor. I also often use them instead of breadcrumbs when making breaded chicken or oven fried chicken (yes, then it becomes coconut chicken and it is delicious)! And of course sometimes I just reach into a bag of unsweetened coconut flakes and grab a handful as a snack 🙂
If I had to use one word to describe the flavor of unsweetened coconut flakes, I would use the word “satisfying”. Unsweetened coconut flakes are great in curbing hunger as they are low in carb and high in fat and fiber. As I chew on them and taste the coconut, the feeling of hunger just goes away.
To be a good snack, coconut flakes have to be unsweetened. Do not use sweetened coconut flakes – they will just make you hungry due to all the added sugar. The only ingredient of healthy coconut flakes should be coconut and nothing else. Click here for 100% unsweetened pure coconut flakes on Amazon.
When the coconut flakes are unsweetened, all you taste is pure clean coconut flavor. As you chew on these coconut flakes, the coconut flavor gets released into your mouth, it’s so refreshing, satisfying and awesome. This is clean eating at its best!
Another thing to be aware of when buying coconut flakes is the preservatives (they can be added to both sweetened and unsweetened coconut flakes). Quality unsweetened coconut flakes should only contain coconut.
What is the difference between coconut flakes and shredded coconut?
Nothing! “Shredded Coconut” and “Flaked Coconut” are exactly the same thing, and these terms are used interchangeably on coconut flakes packaging depending on the manufacturer.
What coconut flakes brand do I recommend? I’m lazy and I like to get stuff on Amazon with my Prime membership, and here’s my favorite unsweetened coconut flakes from Amazon:
Anthony’s Organic Shredded Coconut is unsweetened and has no preservatives and chemicals. These coconut flakes are so delicious, chewy and full of coconut flavor!
