Instant Pot BBQ Ribs

Instant Pot is the best method for cooking ribs by far.  Once you try Instant Pot BBQ baby back ribs, you’ll never make them any other way!

I don’t order the ribs in restaurants anymore because the ones I make in the Instant Pot taste better!  It’s so much cheaper too to make them at home! Homemade BBQ baby back ribs cost about 1/4th of what they would cost in the restaurant!

2 whole slabs of BBQ ribs

Best of all, like all my Instant Pot recipes, making these BBQ ribs is super easy and requires hardly any work.  All you need to do is put the ribs and water in the Instant Pot, let the pot pressure cook them, then brush with BBQ sauce and bake for 10 minutes in the oven.  Effortless gorgeous dinner is ready!  For the exact pressure cooking times and instructions, as always, there is a printable recipe card on the bottom of this article.

How To Cook Ribs In The Instant Pot

Step 1: Put ribs and water in the Instant Pot

Put as many slabs of ribs as you’d like in your Instant Pot (as long as it’s below the “Max Fill” line) along with 1 cup of water (same amount of water no matter how many slabs of ribs).  On the picture below, I have 2 slabs of baby back ribs in my pot.  You can use the trivet if you’d like, but I just put mine directly in the water.

If you search for pork ribs recipes online, you’ll see that a lot of them talk about cutting off the membrane.  Well, I never do it for this recipe – I’m lazy and don’t want to do any unnecessary work :) These Instant Pot ribs come out so tender that the membrane just kind of disappears and you won’t even taste it!

Step 2: Pressure cook the ribs.

Press the “Pressure Cook” or “Manual” button and set the time for 25 minutes on High Pressure.  When it’s done cooking, do the 10 minutes natural release (NR), followed by the quick release (QR).

  1. Made the baby backs last night following instructions in a 6-qt Instant Pot. The smaller ribs on one end were fine, but the thicker ones in the middle and thick end, while done, were not “fall off the bone” tender. Also, if I make these again, I’ll trim the silver skin and some fat and use a rub for more intense flavor.
