This recipe makes 12 individual size molten chocolate lava cakes using a muffin tin.  Yes, a simple muffin tin is a perfect baking tool for these yummy gooey little cakes!  The ingredients are very simple too: chocolate chips, butter, flour, powdered sugar, salt and eggs. You don’t even need to own a mixer, as the batter mixes easily with a spoon!

Simple chocolate batter is poured into muffin cups and baked at a high temperature of 425F for just 9 minutes.  Do not overcook the lava cakes or they’ll turn into chocolate muffins :) We want the gooey chocolate on the inside, chocolate, chocolate, chocolate!

Serve the chocolate lava cakes immediately while they are still hot.  If you need to store them for later, keep them in refrigerator, then reheat in the microwave until hot.  Enjoy!

      1. Hi Melanie,
Can you tell me if it’s possible to make the batter several hours ahead and refrigerated until baking? Maybe, leave out a little bit of time before actual baking? Not sure if this will work or not?
        Thanks, Gina

          1. Thank you. How long do you suggest, I leave it sit out before baking? I’m a little worried that the colder temp will require time out to reach a little warmer batter or a little more time in the oven?
Thank you, again. Can’t wait to make it this weekend.

  1. That’s not really chocolate lava cake. No offense, but real chocolate lava cake has a small ball of frozen chocolate ganache in the center so that it melts into a warm center. But I like your recipe because it’s quick and easy.4/5 stars

  2. Was trying to find an easy way for my 93 year old mother-in-law to make 16 lava cakes for her friends (!!). This recipe is a great solution. Poured the batter into cupcake papers in the muffin tins. She simply lifted the cakes out by the paper, peeled and inverted on plate. Mini lava cakes, but just right. Thank you!

Thank you Melanie! I made these for my son and husband’s birthday dinner last night. They were oh so easy and a big hit. I served them with vanilla ice cream and strawberries. I have a picture to attach, but it’s not allowing me to attach it with my comment ?.
Thank you for sharing this recipe, it is a keeper.
