This is the last brownie recipe you will ever need.  Once you try these epic brownies, you’ll never make them any other way.

How To Make Easy Chocolate Brownies

This recipe produces the best chocolate brownies I ever tasted.  I prefer these brownies to any restaurant brownies.  They are so rich, fudgy and chocolaty – exactly what the brownie should be!  Amazing texture, just the right sweetness – the search for the perfect brownie is finally over.

A great thing about this delicious brownie recipe is that it’s super easy to make.   I love recipes that are easy and produce gourmet results, and this brownie recipe is exactly that.  Even the most inexperienced cook can follow these easy instructions without a fail.  The epic brownies are truly foolproof!

The basic ingredients for best chocolate brownies are very simple: butter, cocoa powder, flour, eggs, sugar and vanilla.  You can’t really go wrong with a mixture of these goodies.  Yes, just the good old basics, no fancy-shmancy ;)  That just proves that a regular home cook can produce amazing bakery-style desserts with no special ingredients and no special equipment.  You just have to follow the right recipes, and my site is full of them :)

Epic Brownies - Best Chocolate Brownies Recipe

Course: Baking, Dessert
Cuisine: American

Ingredients

  • 1 cup 2 sticks of butter
  • 2/3 cups of unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 4 eggs
  • 2 cups of sugar
  • 1 cup of flour
  • 1 tsp of vanilla
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350F.
  • Spray the 9x13 inch non-stick baking dish with a non-stick cooking spray.
  • Put the butter in a microwave-safe bowl and melt the butter in a microwave. Mix the cocoa powder with the butter. Whisk the eggs, sugar and vanilla in another large bowl. Add the butter and cocoa mixture to the egg and mix so everything is combined. Add flour, salt and baking powder to the liquid mixture, and stir until combined (don't overmix).
  • Pour the brownie batter into the baking dish, put in the oven on the middle rack and bake for 25 minutes. Make sure it's on the middle rack, not the top one (brownies on the top rack are too close to the heating element and turn out more cakelike).
  • When the brownie cools down, cut it into squares.

Notes

Do not overbake! Even if the brownie seems a little undercooked, it is fine - it will harden in a baking dish once it cools down. Resist the temptation to cook the brownie more - it will dry out if overcooked. As long as you FULLY pre-heated the oven before putting in the brownies and use the correct size (9x13 inch rectangle) pan, 25 minutes baking time is enough.

  2. Your brownie looks crumbly and tasty. My daughter who is looking over my shoulder is asking my wife to bake her one right now. :) Thank you for the recipe.

  3. Thanks for the great recipe Melanie! I`m not a big sweets fan but brownies are my weakness & these look AMAZING! Can`t wait to give them a try!

Looks amazing! I’ve been looking for a good brownie recipe, and looks like i just found it! Thanks!!

  5. Will the batters consistency be different then box mix’s batter? Mine isn’t “runny” like the box batter. Did I do something wrong? lol! And I heard the more eggs you use the more cake-like, this recipe calls for 4 eggs, is that correct?

  6. These look amazing!! Do you happen to know if they freeze well? I wanted to make a batch before my family comes to visit so I’m not stuck in the kitchen most of the time! Lol ?

This is my favorite brownie recipe! I don’t use any other. They are always the first ones gone when I take them to a potluck. Thank you for the recipe.

  8. I can’t wait to make these! Can I make them a day in advance, and will they still be just as scrumptious the next day?
    Thanks!

    1. Yes, just cover them with plastic wrap so they don’t dry out, and they’ll be just as good the next day. And if you warm them in a microwave before serving, they’ll taste like fresh from the oven!

We made them with all organic ingredients: spelt flour, butter, powdered sugar(didnt have enough cane sugar), cane sugar, cacao powder, ground vanilla beans, celtic sea salt, baking powder. Yes, they are still not a health food. They are, after all, a brownie. Yet, sometimes, SOMEtimes, you just need a brownie. ;) At least by making them at home, you can control the quality of ingredients.
Usually, we cut the sugar in a recipe in half before even trying a recipe, but I’ve been told it’s impossible to do with brownies-while having a good outcome. *sigh*

If you’re going to eat a brownie, these are really good. :) Even with the powdered sugar substitution.

    1. No, it doesn’t need to come out clean, as the brownies should be moist and fudgy inside. If the toothpick is clean, that means the brownies are overcooked. If the oven is completely pre-heated to 350F and the 9×13 pan is used, they will be done in 25 minutes.

Just made these for my son to take back to college tomorrow and ended up making a second batch, in muffin cups. They are SO moist and rich. A hit all around! Thank you.

I have tried this receipe three times and I must say love it. Its an easy recipe to follow. My son begs me to make it everytime.

I have made these twice now, and they are awesome! However. The second time I was rushed and combined the ingredients out of the order described in the recipe and the batter was a more “runny” consistency as well as affecting the texture of brownies themselves. So if you follow the recipe as described; these are possibly the best brownies ever!

  14. Hi, I’m planning to make these brownies this weekend but was wondering if you can add walnuts to it or will that distort the recipe in a negative way?

    Thanks in advance!

These are the best! Warning if you make these for your family, they will not like box brownies for here on out and will let you know every time!

Since I found this brownie recipe a few weeks ago, I have made them at least 4 times for different functions and events. People love them! I usually make brownies from a box mix, but this recipe is so easy that there is no reason to make them from a box ever again. Make these!!! They do not disappoint!!

I just made these tonight and they are so moist and fudgy! This will definitely be my go-to brownie recipe from now on. Thank you!

I made these a couple of weeks ago and am making again for my supervisor’s birthday. They were so simple and delicious!

  19. Of course they’re magic, 2 sticks of butter ?? They have to be good! They look fantastic. I will have to try to make these.

  20. I would like to try this recipe, but want to make a half version. It seems easy enough to reduce the ingredients and use an 8×8 baking dish but you seem to be adamant about pan size and cooking time, what do you recommend?

    1. It should work with half the ingredients and an 8×8 baking dish. Not sure about the cooking time, I’d check at 20 minutes. If you try the half portion, please let us know how long you baked it for.

      1. Tried the half portion twice. First time it appeared underdone at 20 min. Second time, appears overdone at 24 min. Cakelike. Will definitely do 20 min. next time

  21. Used a gluten free flour, a 1-1 sub mix, and they seem to be exactly the same as the regular version ?. Had to leave in oven for 5 extra minutes, as my batter was still a little too jiggly.

I thought i can never make good brownies but when I followed your recipe exactly, it turned out amazingly well! I m so happy and my family liked it too. I m soooo happy and much prayers for you. Thanks much

I loved the taste of the batter and knew the brownies would be just as delicious. I followed the directions exactly. My daughter thought they needed to bake longer than 25 minutes because they were very gooey in the middle. Next time I will cook them just 3-5 minutes longer, checking them carefully to make sure they don’t get overdone. They are delicious though.

  24. Hi since Valentine’s Day is coming up I wanted to make these brownies. I was wondering if I could cut them into heart shapes. Will it still work?

Hi Melanie, I made this brownie recipe for my friends the other day. AND EVERYONE LOVED IT!!
Thanks for sharing the recipe xx

Melanie, you are so right! After years of sampling different brownie recipes, this one is it! They are so easy and absolutely delicious. I like that they cut so cleanly. My last batch was for a special occasion. I covered them with a thin layer of ganache, cut them in small squares, and piped a flower on each square. For Christmas they became Christmas trees. Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful recipe!

This is now my “go to” brownie recipe. I don’t even have to get out the mixer. It’s all done by hand. Why use a mix when these are so easy?

  28. 5 stars
What a great recipe. I had another that I used all the time but my family except one kid are always very indifferent, they will eat them but begrudgingly. Tonight I tried your recipe and they all said it’s the best homemade brownie I’ve ever made for them. So this is my new go to recipe. Thank you

  29. Hello! I just made triple the receipe because I needed it for several portions. How mich time longer should they be cooked if they’re two pans? 5 min more?

  30. These brownies tasted excellent! I don’t know if my oven is out but I have to cook them longer. The first time I made them the middle was literally still batter. Has this happened with anyone else? Or are we thinking it’s my oven?

    1. Ovens vary, so yours probably doesn’t cook as fast as mine. I’ve gotten some e-mails from people whose brownies took much longer to cook, so it’s not just you :) The best strategy is to cook the recommended amount, and if it’s way too raw just cook a bit longer.

  31. I have been looking for a great easy Brownies recipes and this one looks just right. Going to make it for Christmas. Thanks.

  32. Sorry if someone has already asked but is the oven temp for a conventional or fan forced oven?
I really want to try this but the only trouble is so many recipes don’t put that on there and there is usually a 20•celcuis difference in temperature so I don’t want to have to trial and error it.

Good recipe. Tastes even better with walnuts. How do you suggest I add flavor variations to this recipe using nutella or peanut butter?

  34. 5 stars
I’ve made this recipe several times with my daughters and you are correct these brownies are epic! They’re yummy and easy to make.

  35. First time making these. I doubled the recipe. Used two pans in the correct size and as my 10 yr old said … “mom you made chocolate cake, not brownies… but I’m not mad” . Maybe my oven runs hotter than most.. I’m looking forward to trying the recipe again and cutting the baking time by five minutes …

This is THE best recipe I have ever made. I get so many compliments on this baby. I will put in chocolate chips, peanut butter chips, nuts, etc. whenever I see fit and everyone raves about them. Thank you so very much. My students request them all the time.

I’ve made this recipe at least twenty times… though I’m an experienced baker, I follow this to the “T”…. Let them cool completely for neater brownies. Trust me… these are SEAUX delish!!!!
