Making baked french toast is so much easier than frying it! Just pour milk and egg mixture over slices of bread and bake. No need to stand over the stove, deal with the splattering oil and flip over the slices of bread!  The oven does all the work for you, while you are lazily enjoying your morning newspaper (or a morning dose of social media)!

You can make your morning even lazier by assembling the french toast bake the night before and keeping it in the refrigerator.  Baked french toast is a perfect make-ahead breakfast recipe. Then just pop it in the oven in the morning, and it will be ready by the time you shower and get dressed!  Or take the “make ahead” even further and fully bake it the night before as well.  In the morning, you can just take out a slice, put on a plate and microwave it – it will taste as good as freshly baked!

Baked french toast is also much healthier than fried as it has less fat and calories! You can control the amount of butter that goes into this french taost casserole – I use 4 tablespoons of butter per 9×12 baking dish, but you can cut it in half or use no butter if you’d like – it’s totally up to you!

  1. Hi Melanie,

Richard here in Arizona. Your french toast recipe arrived just in time. Had
6 to make breakfast this morn ad did not wish to make same eggs or pancakes.
Increased you recipe a bit and got raves from everyone. After the customary bows I confessed and told them I got the recipe from a chick in Chicago. Great job gal. Only problem I had despite the dishes being well buttered is the bread stuck to the dishes and required some craping to remove.

Yummy! I did not have thick bread so just used my regular wide pan organic, used 2 pans, 7 slices and added nutmeg. I love not having to stand at the stove to cook! Got dishes done instead! Thank you!
