Russian Pelmeni Dumplings recipe - made easy by using wonton wrappers!

I love Russian pelmeni dumplings with meat filling!  The first step to making authentic pelmeni is making the dough with flour and water, rolling it out very thinly and cutting that dough into small circles.  The dough circles are then stuffed with meat filling, folded and sealed to make the dumplings called “pelmeni”.  Pelmeni can then be frozen for later cooking, or cooked right away by dropping them in boiling water.

Making authentic pelmeni from scratch is pretty labor intensive.  The good news is that you can make pelmeni in half the time by using pre-made wonton wrappers!  Pelmeni made with wonton wrappers taste the same as the ones where you make the dough from scratch.  Using wonton wrappers for pelmeni is a great shortcut!

Raw pelmeni dumplings can be frozen for later! To freeze pelmeni, put them on a plate lined with parchment paper and put in a freezer for 1 hour.  After that, put them in a freezer zipper bag and return to freezer.  Now you can take as many pelmenis at time as you want and cook them.  Having a  bag of frozen pelmeni dumplings in your freezer gives you an option of an easy tasty dinner during the busy times! To cook frozen pelmeni, just drop them in a boiling water for 10 minutes.

Pelmeni is traditionally served topped with sour cream.  Enjoy!  For more authentic Russian recipes, see my Russian borscht recipe, Russian salad Olivier and Russian Golubtsy cabbage rolls.

    1. Yes, wonton wrappers definitely save a lot of time! Making pelmeni dough from scratch and rolling it is pretty time-consuming. I even tried the pelmeni-making gadget called “pelmennitsa”, but it was still a lot of work! Once I discovered wonton wrappers, I never looked back. Chinese dumplings use the same strategy as the Russian pelmeni, so it’s very logical to use the wonton dough!
