I’m always surprised at the package directions for cooking boxed macaroni and cheese.  They advise loading the mac and cheese with butter or even worse the margarine with trans fats!  Boxed macaroni and cheese is most commonly made for kids, and who wants the kids eating fattening unhealthy meals?

Good news is that there is absolutely no reason to make packaged macaroni and cheese unhealthy.  When you prepare packaged mac and cheese my way, you won’t have to feel guilty about feeding your kids unhealthy food.  The funny thing is that most kids won’t even notice the difference in their macaroni and cheese – my 3 kids didn’t!

Here’s how to prepare packaged macaroni and cheese in a healthy way: don’t add any butter or margarine, just add the milk! For a standard 8oz package of mac and cheese, you need 1/4 cup milk.  On the picture on top of this article is a bowl of packaged macaroni and cheese prepared without any added butter or margarine.  It’s a nice smooth mac and cheese that’s very yummy.  I used the Kraft macaroni and cheese dinner.

Boil the macaroni, drain it, then put them back in a pot you used for boiling them (it should still be hot), add the cheese sauce powder from the packet that can with mac and cheese, and add 1/4 cup of milk.  Stir with a spoon until the cheese sauce powder is dissolved.  Let stand for 3 minutes and mix again.  That’s all there is to it for a healthy packaged macaroni and cheese.

Here’s the picture of the mac and cheese box that I used:
