How To Make Cucumber Dill Salad

I always wonder why dill is not a commonly used herb in the United States, as it’s healthy, tasty and easy to grow.  Parsley and cilantro are super popular and get their own shelf in a supermaret, while dill is usually tucked away with the “gourmet” herbs.  This is a huge difference from Russia where I spend the first 16 years of my life – there dill is extremely widely used and added to salads, soups and sprinkled as a garnish on many savory dishes.   So because I grew up with dill, I love to add this tasty herb to my food and I hope you too will start using it more after you try my easy cucumber dill salad recipe!

  1. This looks so yummy and fresh, Melanie! I don’t really use dill much in my cooking – not sure why – but it looks like it would go so well with cucumber and red onion, two flavours I adore. Interesting that you spent quite some time living in Russia. I know absolutely nothing about Russian cuisine but am really intrigued by it! It doesn’t seem to be very mainsteam in Western cuisine, or at least not here in Australia. I’m keen to try Borscht to begin with and see how I go from there!

    1. If you are trying Russian cuisine for the first time, I recommend making Russian potato salad Olivier (I have a recipe on this site). That particular salad is always a hit with people not familiar with Russian cuisine!

  2. Mmmmm. It’s been so long since I’ve had fresh dill and it’s almost always available at the grocery store so I don’t know why I don’t use it more often!! Love this fresh salad :)

  3. You are totally right! Dill just isn’t that common of an herb here in the States. You can find it, but you do have to search for it. But it smells (and tastes) so good. This post reminds me that I haven’t used fresh dill in a long time. I’m digging this salad, though…and it looks like a super delicious (and healthy) side dish!

    1. In a new supermarket that opened by my house they sell dill in huge bunches, so I’m really excited! In some other supermarkets unfortunately they only have dill in tiny overpriced plastic packages. Fresh dill is so tasty and healthy, I wish there was more demand!

  4. Dill is one of my favorite herbs. I love it with fish. I make a salad very similar to this with cucumbers, onion, tomatoes, and a tart vinegar dressing. I can’t wait to try your version.

  5. I just made a dill and potato salad. I didn’t know dill was so easy to grow – I must add some to my herb garden. I think dill and cucumber work together really well. In fact, I nearly added cucumber to my dill and potato salad – will try that next time xx
