Tapas Gitana is a great Spanish tapas restaurant in Northfield IL (North suburb of Chicago).  Even though this restaurant is in the suburbs, it really has a city vibe.  It’s busy and bustling, and offers elegant small plates dishes at reasonable prices.

Their tapas are really creative and offer great combinations of flavors – it is so fun to look at their menu and select what you are going to eat :)  Dinner at Tapas Gitana is not just an ordinary meal – it’s a truly fun experience.  In the summer, Tapas Gitana has a great outdoor seating area – a perfect place to have a gourmet tapas meal with a glass of wine!

Here’s the photo of inside Tapas Gitana.  Don’t be fooled by empty tables on the photo – by 6:30pm there was not a single empty table in the whole restaurant :)

The hot tea comes in an elegant tea pot:

Here’s the photo of the first tapa we ordered.  It’s called Aguacate Relleno – half avocado filled with mashed avocado, tiger shrimp, scallions and cilantro, served over baby greens with a brandy mayo sauce ($7.50).

The next tapa is called Pisto Manchego – sauteed eggplant, zucchini, yellow squash, red and green peppers, garlic and tomato ($6.25)

This is one of the most well known Spanish dishes – Spanish tortilla – Tortilla Espanola – traditional Spanish potato and onion omelette ($5.25)

This tapa is my favorite – Calamares A La Plancha – squid cooked on the griddle with garlic, lemon and olive oil ($8.25).  This calamari is outstanding – if you are going to Tapas Gitana and you like calamari, you must get this!

Here’s another tapa – Torre De Langosta – puff pastry tower filled with sauteed lobster meat, scallions, garlic and brandy ($10.95)

Tapas Gitana also has a great selection of desserts.  We didn’t have time for dessert this time, but next time I’m going to order this: Tarta De Nueces con Caramelo Y Chocolate – freshly baked pecan and honey caramel tart topped with chocolate ganache ($5.75) – it sounds so good!

Tapas Gitana is located at 310 Happ Rd, Northfield, IL 60093 (phone number 847-784-9300).  Reservations are recommended, as this place gets really busy.  Tapas Gitana is a perfect spot for a date night dinner!
