Preheat the oven to 375°F and grease a 9x13 baking dish.
In a skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of butter over medium-high heat. Add chopped onion and ¼ teaspoon salt. Cook for 4 minutes, then add Italian seasoning and 1 teaspoon garlic. Cook 1 more minute.
Add ground meat and 1 teaspoon salt to the skillet. Cook until browned and fully cooked, about 6 to 8 minutes.
Stir in the marinara sauce and chopped basil. Simmer for 3 minutes, then remove from heat.
In a large pot, boil salted water and cook spaghetti until al dente, about 12 minutes. Drain and set aside.
In a saucepan, melt the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter. Add the remaining garlic and cook for 1 minute. Pour in the heavy cream and cook, whisking often, until thickened, 8 to 10 minutes.
Remove the cream sauce from heat and whisk in Parmesan cheese and remaining ½ teaspoon salt until smooth.
Add the cooked spaghetti and cream sauce to the baking dish and toss to combine. Spread the meat sauce on top, sprinkle with mozzarella and red pepper flakes if desired, and bake uncovered for 25 minutes. Let rest 10 minutes before serving.
Notes
This dish reheats beautifully and tastes even better the next day.
If using pre-shredded cheese, look for one without anti-caking agents for better melting.
