I just used this recipe yesterday and I substituted the three cups flour with 1 1/2 cups white flour and 1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour. I also added an extra tablespoon of sugar to help combat the stronger taste of the whole wheat. It turned out perfectly...maybe even better.

Thanks for the recipe.

Flora,

I never tried to substitute the oatmeal in this recipe. In baking, you have to follow the recipe exactly, otherwise the results can be dissapointing!

My bread machine pan is square, so the loaves come out square-shaped. I think some bread machines have a rectangular pan.

Do you have to use the oatmeal? Could I use gluten or oat flour or something?

My husband likes store-bought bread and I'd like to make something with storebought texture using a bread machine. I'd like to let the machine do the whole job including baking.

Why does your loaf look square? Is that how the machine does it? How would it look in a regular baking pan?

Thanks for sharing!

Hi Molly,

I'm glad my soft sandwich bread recipe worked for you!

I've never tried making a whole wheat bread. If I ever come across a whole wheat bread recipe that works, I'll surely post it on my website :)

Best regards,
Melanie

Hi Melanie,

Your bread recipe is the only one that has worked since I started using our bread machine two months ago. I am trying to find the equivalent sandwich bread using whole wheat flour. The recipes that came with the machine yield bread that is dense and can be used only to make croutons. My freezer is stocked with homemade croutons. Are there any variations of your recipe in which whole wheat flour is used?

Many thanks

Molly

Yes, you can make it by hand. First, knead the dough until smooth, then let rise until doubled in volume. Punch the dough down and shape into a loaf. Let rise again for 30 minutes. Preheat oven to 350F and bake for 30-45 minutes.

Hi Melanie,

Wonderful recipe. Wondering if this recipe can be done the old-fashioned way by hand; as I'd love to give it a try. A loaf of bread over here costs $5 can take my own sandwich to work. Thanks Pearl

Hi Melanie,

Just curious as to know if I need to use a machine as don't have one. Couldn't I knead this the old-fashioned way by hand, as I love to make bread. Thanks Pearl
