I’m not a vegetarian and I hate tofu, but I really like the black bean veggie burgers from Costco.  They have great texture, bold and slightly spicy taste and they are very filling.  A vegetarian main dish that fills you up is always a great find!

The Costco package of has 12 black bean burgers of Morningstar brand.  Each burger is 1/4 lb, and it’s a pretty large patty.  Somehow a quarter pound black bean burger looks much bigger than a quarter pound beef burger :)

The Morningstar black been burgers are frozen, so you can just put the whole Costco package in your freezer and use the burgers as needed.

There are 2 ways to cook the black bean burgers that are listed on the package: microwave and oven.  I’ve tried them both, and the oven is much better.  When you heat the black bean burger in the microwave, the patty is not crispy.  Baking the veggie burger in the oven produces more crispy and burger-like patty.

For the best black bean burger, follow my directions for cooking it: preheat the oven to 475F and cook the black bean veggie burger patties for 15 minutes.  The package directions never mention such high temperature (in fact, the package recommends 23 minutes at 375F), but from my experiments the highest temperature produces the best results.  Also, I don’t flip the black bean burgers during cooking (even though the package recommends it) – to me it seems like an unnecessary extra work, and my black bean burgers turn out great without flipping.

Serve the black bean veggie burger patty on a bun with your favorite toppings.  Here are the toppings that go really well with the black bean burger: pepper-jack cheese, salsa, sliced onions, guacamole and lettuce.
