This homemade almond butter is so healthy and all natural, and costs a fraction of the store-bought kind! Buy the raw whole almonds in a bulk section of your supermarket and save big! You can even buy organic almonds and make homemade organic almond butter – it will still be dramatically cheaper than NON-organic prepared almond butter!
Many commercial almond butters have added chemicals and preservatives. Your homemade almond butter will have just two ingredients – almonds and salt! One of the main benefits of making your own food is that you know exactly what goes into it! Bye-bye chemicals – this almond butter is all natural and so good for you!
Homemade almond butter is also fresher than store-bought. Look at the expiration dates of purchased almond butter – some are several years away! Who wants to eat the almond butter that was made two years ago? When you make your own almond butter, it will be as fresh as it can get, and the taste will reflect it! Homemade almond butter actually does taste better than store-bought – you can taste the freshness!
This recipe makes the basic raw almond butter using just two ingredients – raw whole almonds and salt. You can easily turn it into flavored almond butter by adding natural flavorings of your choice. Add a tablespoon of honey for honey almond butter, maple syrup for maple almond butter, or crushed chocolate bar for chocolate almond butter! The possibilities are endless!
You can also make roasted almond butter by roasting the almonds for 5 minutes in a 350F oven before grinding them in a food processor. I personally prefer them raw in almond butter because raw almonds have more anti-oxidants than roasted.
Making almond butter yourself is extremely easy. All you need to do is put whole almonds in a food processor and press the On button. Turn off the food processor every 4 minutes and stir the almonds, scraping down the sides of the food processor bowl. After about 15-20 minutes, the almonds will turn into almond butter – yay!
How To Make Almond Butter – Step-By-Step Instructions
Put Almonds In Food Processor
You need a food processor fitted with a steel blade:
Add whole almonds to it. Do not use slivered almonds, as they don’t have enough oil in them to turn into almond butter. The almonds must be whole.
Start The Food Processor
Stage 1 – Almonds Turn Into Powder
After 4 minutes, turn off the food processor and mix the almonds, scraping down the sides of the food processor. At the first stage, the almonds will look like a powder:
Stage 2 – Almonds Turn Into A Sticky Ball
After a while, the almonds will start to stick together and form a ball.
Mix the almonds again. Here’s the closeup of this texture:
Stage 3 – Almonds Turn Into Almond Butter
Finally, the almonds will release enough of the oil to turn into an almond butter!
The almond butter will be so smooth and creamy!
If you have never made almond butter before, make sure you keep processing the almonds until it turns into the actual almond butter. Many beginners quit too early thinking that it will never work, but it always does – it just takes about 15 to 20 minutes. Just refer to the pictures above to recognize the three stages of almonds turning into almond butter – first they look like dry crumbs, then they turn into a sticky ball, and then they turn into almond butter!
