Don’t ever throw out the bones from a Rotisserie chicken! Put them in a crockpot, cover with water, and the bone broth just makes itself!
Bone broth is considered to be a power health food due to the large amount of collagen, 17 different amino acids, calcium, protein, magnesium, phosphorus, vitamin D, potassium, zinc, manganese, copper, boron, iron, vitamin A, vitamin K, vitamin C, and the B vitamins. Simmering the bones for hours extracts all those nutrients into the water and makes them available in an easily digestible form. Bone broth may help boost immune system, help digestion and it is also considered good for your hair, nails, skin and joints.
Homemade broth rules! If you ever looked at the ingredient list of the store-bought broth, many times it has undesirable additives and preservatives. Your homemade bone broth is 100% natural! Also, homemade bone broth is dramatically more concentrated than store-bought broth – at the factory they really water it down 🙂
Having a slow cooker makes the process of making a bone broth from scratch super easy. All you need to do is put the bones, onion and celery in a crockpot and cook on low for 10 hours. If you are using beef or pork bones, you can also roast them beforehand for better flavor, but with chicken bones I find roasting unnecessary.
I usually make bone broth with rotisserie chicken bones – we eat rotisserie chicken for dinner and then the bones are used to make bone broth! If you are not ready to make bone broth right away, you can freeze the chicken bones and then use them later when you are ready! Bone broth is a super-frugal recipe – you are literally using scraps – the bones that would have to go in a garbage otherwise 🙂 Now they will turn into something delicious! Once you try making this bone broth, I bet you won’t throw out any chicken bones ever again!
Some people drink bone broth on its own (hot in a cup), but I prefer to use it as a soup base. To turn bone broth into a soup, just reheat it in a pot and throw in some noodles, rice or vegetables, and simmer until everything is cooked through. You can also use it in place of chicken stock in any soup recipe, such as 15-minute chicken noodle soup, matzo ball soup, chicken tortilla soup or even Russian borsch soup. Bone broth can be frozen in ziploc bags, so you can have rich homemade broth available on demand, whenever you need it!
- Bones from 1-2 rotisserie chickens (or 1-2 lbs beef or pork bones)
- 2 celery stalks, quartered
- 1 onion, quartered
- Salt and pepper to taste
- If you are using beef or pork bones, roast them first for better flavor by baking at 450F for 30 minutes. If you are using chicken bones, you don't need to roast them.
- Put bones, celery and onion in a slow cooker. Fill the slow cooker with cold water, leaving 1-inch space from the top.
- Cook on Low for 10 hours.
- Strain the bone broth through a sieve or a fine-mesh strainer.
- Add the salt and pepper to taste.
- Refrigerate the bone broth in an air-tight container. Bone broth also freezes very well, you can pour it into ziploc bags and freeze.
